This ISO 9001 Quality Assured Company was founded in 1986 by Managing Director Albert Carrion who, with a background in process engineering, operated all manual machines before buying a small CNC lathe early on in the company’s history.

The latest purchase by the company is the very large Okuma Model VTM-2000YB with OSP-P300SA-H Controller and accessories. This 5 axis machine has a 2400mm Swing Capacity with a 1400mm Turning Height. It also has a Capto C8, 60 Tool Automatic Tool Changer.

Such is the size of this machine that global support engineer, Mr Toriumi from Okuma Japan, and Australian resident Okuma engineer Mr Shimizu supported by Okuma NSW engineers were all on hand for its installation and commissioning at this Sydney based engineering company.

“This is my second Okuma machine and I have been overwhelmed with the technical support, information and training which we continue to receive for this latest multi-tasking machine even under COVID-19 conditions,” said Albert Carrion. “This is the largest Okuma machine of its type in Australia and its precision, outstanding rigidity and 5 axis capabilities are impressive and will take us into new markets. We now have the capability of new large general engineering jobs with opportunities to provide even greater service to our customers” he said. “I have always strived to offer something special for my customers and we can now offer large machining jobs of 2m x 1.4m capacity in different materials,” commented Albert.

On average the company produces in excess of 50,000 parts per year and with more than 30 years’ experience in servicing a diverse range of industries such as Mining, Construction Machinery and Energy industries, expansion plans are well advanced into larger components

Sharp Tooling services clients throughout Australia and also has significant indirect exports of components. With its customers’ showing a strong preference for Australian manufactured components, there is a high level of confidence in a continuing trend of bringing engineering jobs back to Australia for competitive local production along with proven quality and on-time delivery.

Quality and service has always been the focus of this company with its dedicated and motivated staff of 22 highly skilled personnel who operate under a flat hierarchical management system which provides continuous and ongoing training.

The company’s modern machinery allows it to offer short lead times plus a Kanban system tailored for clients with special on-time long term delivery requirements.

With a range of multi-tasking machines supported by 2 axis CNC Lathes, manual lathes and milling machines plus surface and cylindrical grinders and the latest 5 axis machine, the company is well placed to meet the demands of the future and fulfil its ambitious expansion plans.

For the engineering staff there is a great deal of excitement with the investment of this totally new advanced technology CNC Multitasking Machine. “It is providing a greatly enhanced experience for our engineers, new skills training, new products and a future with secure employment,” commented Albert.

“Sharp Tooling Managing Director Albert Carrion is a leader in his field and the capabilities of the new Okuma VTM2000-YB will allow Sharp Tooling to expand its offerings to his customers. At the same time it will enhance engineering opportunities for skilled tradespeople and Australian manufacturing as a whole to the benefit of all,” said Okuma Australia’s Northern Regional Manager NSW & QLD, Steve Norbis. “At Okuma we look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with Albert and his team,” he said.
